Wine Tastings & Exploring the Loire Valley

This was our first exploration into the heart of the wine country. We have been enjoying the area around our chateau but decided to see what else is out there. So, we packed up the entourage (2 loaded cars) and headed to Saumur which is a town between Tours & Angers.

We started our adventure with lunch in a very cute cafe (where we discovered white French beans - YUMMY!!!) With full bellies, we headed out for our first wine experience. On our way there, we made a wrong turn.  I did not have the luxury of taking pictures of the 'ditch' we were in, literally! We had two cars on a cliff with walls on one side and a straight climb up in a manual car. Seriously, words cannot explain the expert driving skills it took for us to get out of there alive! Sorry for no pictures, but the image is truly burned into my mind!

After surviving that turnaround and not going over the cliff or hitting the walls, we ended up at a very quaint wine maker in Saumur. Domaine Les Meribelles was a little house on a vineyard. Their sweet yellow dog comes to greet you as you drive in. They had some great sparkling wines as well as local whites and reds. So we all tasted and discovered our favorite wines and then packed some up to bring home. After being in Bourgogne, the prices of the wine were insane here! I believe the most expensive wine we brought home was 6 euros. Have I mentioned that I LOVE it here!!!

Vines, Vines, Beautiful Vines
This is the backyard of the home/winemaker that we visited in Saumur.

Such a nice view!

Headed to the Chateau Saumur.
Such a nice little summer home, don't you think??
